Amazon has announced a new version of its warehouse robot, Proteuswhich can be coordinated using language instead of code. The expanded capabilities come as part of a growing trend toward verticals as the e-commerce giant replaces its workforce with robots.
Amazon says the AI-powered upgrade means its employees can assign robots the way they interact with their colleagues. In the past, workers needed to use special software to navigate the turtle-like footpaths that were designed to lift heavy loads and move large carts in Amazon’s warehouses. “You tell what needs to be done.” It recognizes what’s important, how, when,” says Scott Dresser, vice president of Amazon Robotics.
