A potential blow to the reigning champion’s midfield ahead of the Algeria-Jordan matches
Argentina have been dealt a worrying blow just days before the start of the 2026 World Cup, after doubts arose over midfielder Nico Paz’s fitness for the tournament following an injury sustained in the final weeks of the season with Italy’s Como.
Argentina are set to defend their World Cup title as they are drawn in a group that includes Algeria, Jordan and Austria and will open their matches in the early hours of June 17 against the Desert Warriors.
However, before that, the Latin team will face Honduras and Iceland in two friendly matches on June 7 and 10, respectively.
Paz suffered a knee injury against Hellas Verona, an injury that kept him out of the next two matches.
Initially, medical assessments indicated that it was just a minor injury that would not affect his participation in the World Cup, but recent developments have raised concerns in the Tango camp.
According to a report from Spanish newspaper AS, the atmosphere has turned from optimism about the player’s recovery to concern given that he could be suffering from an injury that goes beyond just a muscle problem.
Baz is expected to undergo daily assessments over the coming period before a final decision is made on his participation, while he is currently listed as one of the players at risk of missing the World Cup.
Argentina hopes to achieve an unprecedented victory in the World Cup
The concern comes after an outstanding season for the youngster, which has made him one of the most popular names touted to play a key role in the re-blooding of Argentina’s national team.
His potential absence could also leave an impactful void in midfield, especially as the reigning champions are still searching for solutions to the departure of star Angel Di Maria and need players who can link up and play like Paz.
According to AS, if the absence of the former Real Madrid Academy player from the World Cup is confirmed, then Emiliano Buendia will appear as the strongest candidate to replace him in the final list.
Buendia’s nomination comes after his remarkable performances for Aston Villa at the end of the season, where he proved his ability to make the difference in big games. The player is also distinguished by his tactical flexibility and his ability to occupy different offensive positions behind the attackers.
Observers believe his recent brilliance, as well as the high morale he is in, could give him the edge to represent Argentina at the World Cup if Nico Paz’s absence from the tournament is confirmed.
