All-Ireland SFC: Moran thinks Mayo are not yet the ‘finished article’

Mayo manager Andy Moran feels his side are “not the finished article” after five years on the sidelines with a 17-point victory over Louth in their county’s first All-Ireland SFC final.

It’s the mix of youth and experience that Moran looks to combine this season with the exciting talent of Kobe MacDonald by seasoned campaigners.

While Mayo fell short in their Connacht semi-final against Roscommon, they have improved their game throughout the All-Ireland campaign and now have Sam Maguire off 70 minutes against Kerry or Dublin who meet in the second semi-final on Sunday (16:00 BST).

They semi-final win was built on some attacking flair, but sheer determination to force turnovers while stopping the Way County attack that led to their three goals.

Despite the impressive performance, Moran feels his team still has more to offer.

“We have a bunch of good defenders who are addicted to the game of football and just want to learn,” he said.

“We’re not the last article, so when young (Eoin) McGreal and these guys can play 55 minutes at 19 in Croke Park, it makes a big difference.

“Ryan (O’Donoghue) up front, (Enda) Hession, Jack Coyne and Donnacha (McHugh) at the back – they’re great leaders for the place.”
