AliExpress has paid about $630 million in fines for selling illegal products

AliExpress has been hit with a fine of €550 million (about $629 million) for violating the European Digital Services Act (DSA) by failing to prevent illegal, unsafe, or counterfeit products from being sold on the e-commerce platform. The European Commission ordered that AliExpress did not take any action to reduce the spread of illegal products, noting that the company “provided insufficient staff” to verify sales, and failed to remove unsafe toys and dangerous cosmetics for “several weeks” after they were found.

“The prevalence of counterfeit clothing, unsafe toys, dangerous cosmetics and other illegal and harmful products is not an unavoidable cost of online shopping – it is AliExpress’s failure to comply with its obligations under the Digital Services Act,” EU chief technology officer Henna Virkkunen said in the announcement. “Too much is no excuse; risks must be identified and systematically managed so consumers can shop online safely.”

This is the highest penalty imposed under the DSA bloc’s rules, followed by Chinese trader Temu, who was also fined more than $230 million per. similar DSA offenses in May. AliExpress now has until October 20 2026 to remedy the breach, or risk facing additional fines from time to time.
