Barcelona have confirmed captain Alexia Putelas is leaving the club this summer amid strong interest from London City Lionesses.
London City have been in positive talks with Putellas for months and have offered a bigger contract than Barcelona.
However, there is interest from the NWSL and options are still being evaluated. Changes to salary cap rules earlier this year mean he could earn around $1m (£740,000) per season at State.
The midfielder is regarded as one of the best players in the world, and won the Ballon d’Or twice in 2021 and 2022. He will be looking to win it for the third time this year and his first since overcoming an ACL injury in 2022.
It comes after another Primera Division title with Barcelona this season – his tenth – and this one Champions League defeat to Lyon in Saturday’s showpiece final. He won the European title for the fourth time.
He was also part of the Spain squad that won the 2023 World Cup and finished runners-up to England at Euro 2025.
Putelas spent a year at Barcelona’s La Masia academy during his youth career, rejoining the club in 2012 from Levante and leading them to unprecedented success.
