Al-Salami. We showed a different face to the star star… and this is what worries us before the battle with Algeria.

“Austria’s franchises gave them an advantage… and the Alva award is proof that we were on par.”

Jordan national team coach Jamal Al-Salami has said that Al-Nashama’s 3-1 loss to Austria in their first match at the 2026 World Cup did not reflect the true face of the game.

“Two weeks after facing Switzerland and then Colombia, today we saw a different face of starry and proud players and the result does not reflect the true face of the game.”

“In the first half we conceded a goal and tried to get behind them. We had opportunities we didn’t know we had and we need to do better with them. We spoke to the players at half-time and equalized and we were at our best, but the stoppage affected the players and some simple details made us miss the second goal.”

Al-Salami pointed to the strength of the Austrian team, saying: “There are players from Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund in the Austrian team and they have big advantages and are tall. We tried to come back with a result, but we were not lucky.”

“Yazan Al-Arab came forward to help us with the crosses, but we failed. Overall, it’s an experience and I’m happy with the players’ performance and I thanked them in the dressing room.”

He continued. “The biggest proof that we were level was that Ali Alwan won the man of the match award, even though he was out for almost 4 months.”

Regarding the next match against Algeria, Al-Salami said: “We and Algeria lost the first round and the most important thing for us is to recover our fitness and do well in the Austria game and that can help us in the next game.”

He concluded. “We will play a game with our Algerian brothers who have outstanding players. We hope to arrive on time, play a good match and get a better result than today’s game.”
