Ahead of Egypt clash… Ancelotti explains Neymar’s latest fitness developments

The Italian coach is in no hurry to bring the injured Samba star to the team

Italy’s Carlo Ancelotti, the coach of the Brazil national team, explained the latest developments in the condition of his star player Neymar da Silva, who suffered a leg muscle injury, ahead of the friendly match against Egypt in preparation for the 2026 World Cup.

The Brazilian national team will meet its counterpart in Egypt early next Sunday morning as part of the team’s preparation for the tournament. The Seleção team won a huge 6-2 victory over Panama in a friendly match last Sunday.

After the arrival of the Seleção mission in New York, where the team is holding its main camp, Ancelotti said: “Neymar is progressing well and his condition is improving all the time, but we are in no rush to get him involved.”

The Italian coach previously indicated that the Brazilian captain could be available for either the first or second group stage match as the team begin their campaign in the tournament against Morocco on June 13, before taking on Haiti on the 19th of the same month and Scotland on June 24.

For his part, Brazil team doctor Rodrigo Lasmar revealed last week that Neymar has suffered a leg muscle injury that will keep him out for two to three weeks.

The 34-year-old Brazilian star is set to play in his fourth World Cup after Ancelotti called him up to the final squad after more than two years away from the national team.

Speaking about Brazil’s chances at the tournament, Ancelotti emphasized his country’s ability to compete with everyone, saying: “We want to give our best and work as hard as possible. Everyone knows the level of expectations for Brazil.”

He added: “I don’t see a team that is above all others to win the title. There are many strong teams, but I believe that Brazil is capable of competing with any team in the world.”
