Video referees will have broader powers
The International Football Federation (FIFA) is going to tighten the fight against the 2026 World Cup, taking away the shirt and “wrestling” in the penalty area at the 2026 World Cup, reports the British newspaper The Sunday Times.
The newspaper adds that the main point of this decision is that previously, if a foul was committed just before a corner or free kick was taken, the video technology (VAR) usually could not intervene because the ball was not yet in play.
VAR can now report this foul and the goal can therefore be disallowed.

The developments are reminiscent of some highly controversial moments in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final between Morocco and Senegal, where several VAR decisions on contact and penalty infringements sparked heated debate, the British newspaper reported.
FIFA also cited England’s friendly with Uruguay when England’s Adam Wharton blocked his opponent Jose Maria Jimenez before the Three Lions scored from a corner in last March’s 1-1 draw.
According to Pierluigi Collina, head of FIFA’s refereeing committee, that goal would not have counted under the new guidelines.
