The US military has launched strikes against Iranian targets after President Donald Trump accused Iran of “foolish violations” of the truce following an attack on a cargo ship off the coast of Hormuz.
On Thursday, the ship was hit in one direction by a raid drone, causing no casualties, an incident that was planned to displace more than 11,000 sailors in the region.
In response, US Central Command announced on Friday that it had struck missile and drone storage facilities and coastal radar sites.
Minutes before the attack was announced, President Trump said, “You’ll see,” when asked if the United States would respond to an Iranian attack.
US Central Command – or CENTCOM – described the strikes as a “strong response” to the drone strikes.
“The unnecessary raids on merchant ships by Iranian forces are a violation of the ceasefire agreement,” he said.
“Furthermore, Iran’s dangerous behavior has undermined freedom of navigation as trade flows through a vital international trade corridor.”
Centcom said the U.S. military “will continue to provide safe passage coordination and support for commercial vessels transiting the coast.”
Since the U.S. and Israeli offensive on Iran began in late February, Tehran has effectively shut down a vital waterway for transporting oil and gas — causing a spike in global oil prices and suffocating other essential commodities such as fertilizer.
The U.S. and Iran agreed on June 17 to end hostilities under a 14-point memorandum of understanding, which called on Iran to “make best efforts to allow free passage of commercial vessels for 60 days.”
