The Belgian goalkeeper leads his country against Senegal
Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has started his journey towards his German counterpart Manuel Neuer’s historic throne at the World Cup after the “machines” were eliminated from the 2026 World Cup.
Courtois has started for Belgium to face Senegal in the 2026 World Cup Round of 32 at the Lumen Field Stadium in Seattle, USA today, Wednesday.
According to statistics network Opta, this is Courtois’ 19th appearance for Belgium at the World Cup, moving him into third place on the list of most capped goalkeepers in World Cup history.
The Belgian goalkeeper is tied with Uruguayan Fernando Muslera, who also participated in 19 matches, one match behind Frenchman Hugo Lloris.
Courtois could jump into second place if Belgium can reach the quarter-finals, but his task will be more difficult to reach the summit currently held by Manuel Neuer.
Neuer’s 23 appearances at the World Cup are the most capped goalkeeper in the competition’s history, meaning Belgium will need to finish the tournament all the way for Courtois to equal his record.
Belgium’s biggest achievement came at the 2018 World Cup, when they qualified for the semi-finals before losing 0–1 to France, but managed to finish third after beating England 2–0.
It is noteworthy that Neuer will not play new matches in the World Cup after Germany was eliminated from the round of 32 of the 2026 World Cup by Paraguay on penalties.
