Spain coach Luis de la Fuente responded to France coach Didier Deschamps’ complaints about the refereeing after their 2-0 defeat in the semi-finals of the 2026 World Cup yesterday, Tuesday.
Deschamps said in his statements after the defeat“I just want to ask one question… Was the referee of sufficient quality to officiate the semi-final match of the World Cup? I will not answer this question, but there were many controversial incidents.”
“If I talk about the referee now, I’ll say that I’m looking for excuses because we lost, but I repeat the same question: is the referee qualified to officiate the semi-final of the World Cup?”
He continued his speech by saying: “It wasn’t just the penalty that was controversial, there were other questions, and I don’t have a personal problem with the referee, but everyone can ask this question.”
For his part, De La Fuente was asked about Deschamps’ statements, and he responded during a press conference, saying: “When the results don’t go the way you want, you can always find an excuse.”
