Sebastian Becasese has announced his retirement from coaching Ecuador’s national team following their exit from the 2026 World Cup in the round of 32 following a two-goal loss to Mexico.
Ecuador’s national team bid farewell to the tournament in the Mexican capital, Mexico City, thus ending Becasisi’s journey with the national team, after he confirmed that his contract was only extended until the end of the World Cup.
The 45-year-old specialist said in a reported post-match press conference The New York Times“My contract expired at the end of the World Cup. We failed to achieve the achievement we promised, which was the best participation in the history of Ecuador at the World Cup, and today it is time to say goodbye.”
Despite the disappointment of an early exit, Bekasisi confirmed he leaves feeling proud of what he has achieved during his tenure with the team.
“I’m grateful to the fans and I’m grateful to the players who gave their hearts on the pitch. It was a sad night, but I’ll leave with good memories.”
He concluded by noting that the moments he spent in the dressing room with his players after the final whistle were some of the most impactful moments for him.
“I spoke to the players after the game and it was a very nice two hours, despite the pain we all felt.”
Bekasisi is the sixth coach to leave after the World Cup, following Marcelo Bielsa (Uruguay), Ronald Koeman (Netherlands), Hong Myung Bo (South Korea), Czech Republic coach Miroslav Kubik and Scotland coach Steve Clarke, in addition to Labrie’s sacking as Lucia’s coach.
