If you follow the story of quantum computing long enough, it can begin to appear that any quantum system that can switch between two well-separated energies can be used as a qubit. Atoms, ions, photons, electrons, and manufactured materials all have supports. One of the main factors that attract sponsors is the development technology. We’re going to need a lot more advanced qubits to start making any complex designs, and the ability of any technology to get us there is a matter of debate.
So just as some technologies can support thousands, some competitors are still working on a few small things – the companies behind them believe that they have the ability to improve the quality.
One of these technologies involves quantum dots that contain a single electron. Their advantage is that we can make them using the same technology we use to make traditional processors, a process that has proven to be dangerous. This week saw two new papers detailing different ways to use quantum dots, one of which was so interesting that IBM bought the company that developed it. Separately, a company has released a 100-electron display processor with a diamond problem, a technology that was not yet known to grow.
