FIFA is in trouble ahead of the World Cup
A press release revealed today, Tuesday, that a legal investigation has been launched against the Federation of International Football Associations (FIFA) after it was accused of fraud ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
The Sun newspaper reported that the Texas Attorney General’s Office announced on Tuesday that it has opened an investigation with the International Association of Soccer (FIFA) after receiving several complaints about the fraudulent sale of tickets for games in Dallas and Houston just days before the start of the World Cup.
Authorities said in a statement that many consumers were “misled” about the location of the seats they purchased, which could be a violation of Texas business laws.
In particular, the prosecution notes that in one of the complaints received, a fan paid for first-class tickets, the highest, with “privileged” views of the stadium, but after the purchase, FIFA changed the seating chart and moved his ticket to a lower-class area.
The statement noted that the Attorney General’s Office has received numerous complaints from consumers describing similar experiences where buyers end up with seats with less attractive views than they originally purchased.

“I will work to ensure that FIFA conducts ethical and fair business practices so that Texas fans are treated fairly,” Attorney General Paxson said.
He continued. “Sports has a unique ability to bring people together, and FIFA needs to understand that Texans take competition and their rights as consumers seriously.”
These Texas investigations are in addition to other similar investigations in California and New York related to World Cup ticket sales.
California’s attorney general has raised complaints about similar practices in Texas, and state attorneys general in New York and New Jersey have cited FIFA over high ticket prices.
FIFA World Cup ticket prices have gone upcombined with the games’ high cost and lack of transparency about sales, drew criticism from fans and US prosecutors.
The average price of tickets for the final, which will be held at MetLife Stadium in New York, is $11,790, according to SeatPick.com.
