Carr opened it again unusual comment of ABC licenses Disney’s TV station. Eight TV stations owned by the company denied the commentaccuses the FCC of seeking to restrict speech as part of an “unprecedented attack on a single broadcasting license company.”
The station’s license review is based on allegations that Disney’s diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) practices violate anti-discrimination laws. But Carr already threatened the licenses of ABC broadcasters on airing Jimmy Kimmel, and ABC said the FCC is “using the license renewal process to punish the broadcaster for its decisions.”
The FCC criticized Disney in a statement released to the media yesterday. “Disney wants FCC to classify ‘The View’ as a ‘fake news program.’ And it has chosen to run a disinformation campaign to tell its story—to mislead viewers about the law. This is the choice,” the FCC said.
We asked the FCC’s public relations office to describe the portion of the ABC ad as “false” and will update this article if we receive a response.
Carr responded to the ABC commercial in X post. “Disney wants the FCC on board Views Carr wrote: “A very good story” under state law Views from similar policy requirements that Congress passed decades ago. What do you think? I am Views good news?”
Carr’s post did not mention that Views he already received an exemption from the law 24 years ago.
“Until now, there has been no argument that The View is supposed to be a fake news show,” ABC said. May 7 posting. “In 2002, ABC sought and obtained a ruling from the Mass Media Bureau affirming its liability. The ruling is still in effect. The agency has taken no action in the past two decades to change or overturn the ruling and there is no reason to do so.”
Carr’s threats to broadcasters like ABC have drawn criticism. US Senators Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) recently he prepared the law on “jawboning” to prevent government officials from trying to force broadcasters or technologists to suppress speech.
