A US judge has upheld the conviction of a former judge who helped a man cheat Court Affairs

Activists say former judge Hannah Dugan has been targeted by the Trump administration for resisting immigration crackdowns.

A federal judge in the United States overturned the decision of Hannah Dugana former Wisconsin judge who was charged with helping a man smuggle immigrants who came to his court.

U.S. District Judge Lynn Adelman suspended Dugan’s sentence to consider efforts to overturn his conviction, but declined to do so Tuesday.

“The court’s decision is wrong,” Dugan’s legal team said in response to the ruling.

Dugan’s arrest and the federal indictment underscored US President Donald Trump’s crackdown on officials Trump sees as lenient on immigration or who flout the federal government’s crackdown on mass deportations.

The first one Wisconsin judge met with immigration officials who had arrived at the courthouse looking for an undocumented man named Eduardo Flores-Ruiz, who is scheduled to face federal battery charges, telling them that their warrant was not sufficient to arrest Flores-Ruiz.

He was convicted of aiding and abetting his agents by throwing an undocumented individual and his lawyer out of a jury trial. Dugan, who served as judge for nine years before resigning due to threats of impeachment by Republicans, was taken into custody and released on bail a week later.

Republican officials have shown Dugan such as a protest judge who helped an illegal immigrant avoid law enforcement. The 67-year-old is expected to spend five years in prison after being found guilty on December 19, but is expected to be on probation instead of having a non-violent criminal record.

Dugan’s attorneys said the Trump administration wanted him to defame the government on a very important matter.

Previous administrations have largely resisted immigration-related arrests the courts because of concerns that it may deter immigrants from entering the country into law enforcement or reporting.

The Trump administration has cracked down on that tradition, as well as attacks on immigrants at other critical sites such as houses of worship.
