The French legend considers New York to be his favorite city in the world
French football legend Thierry Henry has been given a special honor in New York during the 2026 World Cup after local authorities decided to temporarily name one of the city’s streets after him for the duration of the tournament.
The initiative comes as part of a campaign launched in New York City to celebrate the stars of international soccer, coinciding with the United States, along with Canada and Mexico, hosting the 2026 World Cup finals, with a number of streets being renamed in honor of stars who have left a notable mark on the game’s history.
The French network RMC Sport explained that the name of Thierry Henry, world champion with the French national team in 1998 and one of the most famous players who defended the colors of the New York Red Bulls club in the American League, was chosen to decorate one of the famous intersections in the heart of Manhattan, namely at the intersection of 50th Street and Sixth Avenue.
Henry expressed his great joy at this honor through a message posted on his official accounts, emphasizing the special place New York holds in his life.
The French star said: “As a French person who calls London home, New York remains my favorite city in the world. To have one of his streets named after me is an honor I never imagined I would have.”
He added: “This city holds a special place in my heart. My son Tristan was born here and New York will always be a part of our family’s history.”
Henry was unable to attend the award ceremony in person due to his media ties in England, where he works as a TV analyst during the World Cup, but he wanted to thank everyone who contributed to the cause.
He said: “Unfortunately, due to work commitments, I could not be present today, but I was with you in spirit and mind. Thank you for this wonderful honor.”
He also thanked his former New York Red Bulls colleagues who represented him at the event, as well as New York City Mayor Zahran Mamdani and local council member Virginia Maloney, who initiated the initiative.
“We will meet soon for a selfie,” Henry jokingly concluded his message.
Henry is considered one of the most prominent names associated with the history of French and international football. He also made a distinct mark during his time with the New York Red Bulls in the American League, making him a special place among the city’s fans even years after his retirement.
