Prosecutors in the United States are charging a 29-year-old woman Jonathan Rinderknecht of intentionally starting the Palisades Fire, which grew into one of the most devastating fires in the history of Los Angeles, California.
Opening statements were made Wednesday in Rinderknecht’s federal trial, where he is charged with vandalism, arson, and arson.

Rinderknecht has denied the first charge fire in January 2025.
Although prosecutors portrayed him as a premeditated arsonist, defense lawyers argued that there was no evidence that he set the fire. If anything, they said, Rinderknecht tried to stop them.
“When all the evidence is found, there will be one thing missing: evidence that Jonathan Rinderknecht started the fire on January 1,” attorney Steve Haney told jurors.
The Palisades Fire eventually killing 12 people and leaving coastal areas north of Los Angeles untouched after sweeping areas such as the Pacific Palisades.

If convicted, Rinderknecht faces a minimum of five years in prison, and a maximum sentence of 45 years.
Firefighters say the Palisades Fire started on January 1, 2025, burning from the roots before the main fire started on January 7.
They argue that evidence places Rinderknecht at the top of the hill where the fire allegedly started.
“The evidence will show that the defendant started the fire on January 1 and did it intentionally,” Assistant US Attorney Mark Williams told jurors in Los Angeles court.
“And the evidence will show that the fire that the defendant started on January 1 is the same fire that destroyed everything on January 7.”
Rinderknecht allegedly made 16 phone calls on Jan. 1, and his cell phone records put him near the mountain where the fire occurred, according to prosecutors.
He also tells of the quick Rinderknecht who broke into ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence model, in the months leading up to the fire. It described a “burning forest” and “people fleeing”.
“He wanted revenge – revenge against people, because he blamed people for all his problems,” said prosecutor Matt O’Brien.
But Rinderknecht’s security team said the 29-year-old was trying to help put out the fire, calling the fire department and leading them to the scene.
Haney played portions of Rinderknecht’s 911 calls as evidence. “It’s the words and actions of someone trying to stop a fire,” Haney said.
He also instructed the jury not to count Rinderknecht’s “use of his computer” for the ChatGPT search.
Firefighters initially responded to reports of the fire on Jan. 1, but the fire burned, prompting evacuations and property damage.
Things like extreme drought, worst of all global warmingand increased residential development in wildland areas have increased the risk of wildfires in California in recent years.
The Palisades Fire was fueled by strong Santa Ana winds and dry weather, which helped fuel the fire.
According to Cal Fire, the fire has grown to more than 23,000 acres (9,300 hectares).
The Palisades Fire was the ninth deadliest in state history and the third deadliest in terms of number of homes destroyed. Of the 10 largest wildfires in California history, all but one have occurred in the past decade.
