A surprising development changes Chiesa’s future at Liverpool

Despite continued speculation over his future at Liverpool, Italian Federico Chiesa has confirmed his desire to stay in a clear message, stressing that his full focus is on proving himself for the Reds in the new season, which coincides with the start of the Spanish manager Andoni Iraola’s era.

Chiesa’s comments came after he took part in Iraola’s first friendly in charge, which saw Liverpool beat Sunderland 4-2, where the Italian scored one of his side’s goals to give himself a morale boost at the start of the new campaign.

Chiesa has confirmed he is not currently considering another club, despite rumors linking him with a move away from Anfield in the transfer window. The Italian player told reporters. “I’m happy here at Liverpool at the moment. I love the club, I love the fans, I love everything.”

In the announcements made by the British Broadcasting Corporation, he added:BBC:“I’m doing my best to get a chance here and then we’ll see what happens… At the moment the only thing I’m thinking about is Liverpool.”

Two difficult seasons with the Reds

Chiesa did not get his full chance after moving to Liverpool from Juventus in the summer of 2024 for £12.5m, with a contract extension until the summer of 2028.

Over the past two seasons, particularly under Dutch coach Arne Slott, the 28-year-old has made just one Premier League appearance, while scoring five goals in 50 appearances in various competitions.

In statements to La Gazzetta dello Sport last June, Chiesa hinted at the possibility of leaving if his current situation continued, as he said:

A new beginning with Iraola

Asked if he sees the arrival of Andoni Iraola as a new opportunity to revive his Liverpool career, Chiesa confirmed that every season brings with it a new opportunity, but he prefers to focus on the work on the pitch.

He said: “I don’t know, it’s hard to say. Every beginning of the year is always a new beginning… Maybe there were many new beginnings, but I don’t care. I’m just trying to do my best for this new coach.”

He explained that he had the same mindset last season, adding: “I tried to give my best under Arnie Slott’s leadership as well.”

The Italian international admitted that he felt he deserved a bigger role in the team last season, but stressed that he fully respects the decisions of the technical staff.

He said: “Last year I felt ready to play a bigger role, but it depended on the coach and whether he wanted me to play or not. Of course, I wanted to play more, but this is the reality.”

He concluded his speech by saying: “The coach made his decision, had his tactics and decisions, and I have nothing to say about it. This is football. This year, let’s say, it’s a new chapter, there’s a new coach, and I have to focus on that.
