Unprecedented crisis has entered the Premier League play-off line after Middlesbrough FC made a formal request to exclude Southampton from the race for the last Premier League qualification spot amid allegations of spying on their training sessions.
Violating the essence of sports integrity
In a sharply worded official statement, Middlesbrough emphasized the seriousness of the incident, saying: “This incident, which specifically follows and records our training ahead of this important game, affects the very essence of sporting integrity and fair competition.”
The “Northern Club” added: “In the circumstances, the only appropriate response is to impose a sporting penalty which excludes Southampton from the play-off final.”
A quick hearing can make all the difference
In turn, the English Premier League announced it would hold an urgent hearing to discuss the allegations against Southampton, warning fans of the possibility of “changes” to the final at the legendary Wembley Stadium on May 23.
In light of these dramatic developments, Hull City, who secured their place in the final after beating Millwall in the other semi-final, remain in limbo and confused as to the identity of the opposition they will face for their historic promotion ticket.
Southampton call for an extra timeout
Last Tuesday, Southampton asked for more time to complete a comprehensive internal investigation into the allegations against him, confirming in an official statement that it was “co-operating fully” with the English football authorities.
The allegations relate to members of Southampton who filmed Middlesbrough training without prior permission, in apparent breach of the rules governing the competition.
The FA intervenes
The FA has called for an independent disciplinary committee to hold a hearing “as soon as possible”, citing the seriousness of the situation and the sensitivity of the time.
The decisive return match
The two sides played out a goalless draw in last Saturday’s first leg before the match resumed last Tuesday night in Southampton, where the latter qualified for the final after winning the second leg.
A clear violation of the rules
The English Premier League explained that Southampton were accused of breaching regulations which oblige clubs to deal with each other in the “best degree of good faith” and which expressly prohibit an opponent from controlling or attempting to control a match in the 72 hours before a head-to-head clash between them.
$254 million is at stake
This crisis is of exceptional importance given the huge financial gain generated by promotion to the Premier League, with the financial prize for the winner of the play-off final estimated at no less than £200 million (about $254 million) in future earnings.
