The Food and Drug Administration this week cleared a type of carnivorous fly for use in the treatment of maggot wounds, according to announcement of Cuprina Holdingsa Singapore company that has named its new maggot treatment MediFly Maggots.
With the approval, Cuprina appears to be the only company that has FDA approval to sell two types of fly larvae – and it’s surprising that they can dominate the world’s fly larvae market.
The new version is Lucilia covered itor Australian flies. It is a close relative of Lucilia sericataor green bottle flies, which are the types of flies most commonly used in wound healing, often referred to as biosurgery or worm treatment (MDT). L. sericata is the only fly with FDA approval, which the agency first issued in 2004 to Ronald Sherman, who is. now Cuprina’s Medical and Scientific Director.
“We now have FDA approval for both of the formulations used in MDT, a status that no other company has,” Cuprina CEO David Quek said in a statement. “This establishes our wound care platform in one of the most challenging markets in the world and gives us a competitive advantage as we continue to build our reputation.”
The company has not commented on any difference between the treatment of the two worms. On the contrary, they are considered suitable in different markets. L. sericata it’s common in western wound care, Cuprina says, right L. cuprina it can be more noticeable in Australia, Africa, Asia, and some parts of the Americas.
For his part, Sherman, a long-time addiction specialist, welcomed the approval as a step forward for MDT in general. “The deworming treatment has found its place in modern wound care, and the addition of a second type cleared by the FDA strengthens the field as a whole,” said Sherman. “Lucilia covered it it has an excellent reputation around the world, and bringing it under US FDA approval gives physicians and their patients more flexibility in how the drug is administered.”
