A review of the combination – set up is the fastest competition in the show | Theater

AAdoption and care planning are at the heart of Julia Cranney’s new philosophy. There are hoops to jump through, questions that need to be asked to open up your life and hope to shake the bottom of it all. Mat (Paislie Reid) and her friend, James, are drawn to early placement, a process in which babies and toddlers are placed with prospective adopters by their original adopters. However, there is always a chance for the child to return to their birth family.

The script sheds light on this process but Cranney’s screenplay jumps into Mat’s life too quickly to be effective. When we meet him, he is very private, doesn’t like children and works in a shop. Then, he fell down to James. Soon their relationship is on the mend, he is reunited with his daughter and plans to start a family of their own.

The content of each part of Mat’s journey is not given enough space to breathe. The big events in life come in quick succession – it takes half a 70 minute conversation to start – but there’s more and we need a better understanding of Mat’s background to help build a picture of his world.

The content also feels smoother because Reid’s delivery stays at the same speed, stopping the line from tracking the entire line. Directed by Kate Treadell, they circle the confines of offstage as Mat tries to make sense of his feelings. In the middle of the scene, white confetti falls from the ceiling, showing the confusing aspects of life that he works so hard to control, but can’t quite control. It is a metaphor that is heavy.

Mat’s troubled childhood and relationship with his nan create a version of the mother he grows up with, and Cranney draws clear lines between past, present and future. “Preparing to adopt your parents is like training for a race,” Mat admits. The drama shows promise in offering a system that can lead to beautiful, long-term marriages, and also tests courage and crushes dreams. Sharp stories can help these topics fly.
