Julien Gascoigne, senior director of paintings at Sotheby’s, said it was one of Landseer’s greatest Highland masterpieces.
Glenn Emperor describes it as an atmospheric sister painting.
Gascoigne said: “Where the emperor shows the pillar in the brightness of youth, this is a darker, more fantastic vision: majestic, full of tension and a symbol in the vision of the Highlanders.”

Edward Bates originally paid £800 for the work, but a banking crisis forced the industrialist to sell the work along with the rest of the collection in 1868.
The painting has since been exhibited in public galleries at various times.
