Police released body camera footage showing officers handcuffing 18-year-old Henry Nowak as he lay dying. The BBC chose to remove the audio in parts of this video due to its disturbing content.
In December, footage showing the killer Vikrum Diwa being racially abused by the teenager and acting in self-defence was false. The officers said his turban had been dislodged and he was injured.
Police said they had been in contact with Henry Nowak’s family before sharing the image. He also played on the court.
Digwa, 23, was sentenced to life in prison on Monday with a minimum of 21 years. He used the 21cm (8in) blade, which he said he carried as part of his Sikh faith, to kill Nowak, who was walking home alone after a night out with friends in Southampton on December 3. A judge dismissed Digwa’s claim of racism.
Speaking outside court, the victim’s father, Mark Nowak, said the comparison between his son and Digwa was “unbearable”.
“Henry should not have died in police custody on the streets of Southampton,” he said, “inhuman and degrading”. Digwan added that he was “courtesy” and “we understand, he was never handcuffed”.
“Henry didn’t die with dignity. He didn’t die with the care he deserved. He passed out before anyone believed him,” he said.
