Lionel Messi made a rare World Cup history after leading Argentina to a comeback from two goals down against Egypt in the 2026 World Cup final.

Messi helped end the Pharaohs’ dream of reaching the World Cup quarter-finals 3-2 after coach Hossam Hassan’s side had led by two clean sheets until the 79th minute.

Messi became only the third player in World Cup knockout stage history to score twice in five minutes or less, overturning his team’s two-goal deficit, a feat only surpassed by Egyptian soccer legend Abdel Rahman Fawzi in Italy in 1934 and then Kylian Mbappe in the 2022 World Cup final, according to Argentina.

The statistic contains a remarkable paradox, as the first to achieve this feat was an Egyptian player, while the second achievement came at the expense of Argentina in the Qatar 2022 final, before Messi tied for the Egyptian team at the 2026 World Cup.
