The force of the 63.5 million cubic meters of rock that hit the fjord produced enough energy to register around the world. The seismic waves that flooded the world were recorded by sensors around the world and were similar in strength to a magnitude 5.4 earthquake. The water flowing inside the fjord set up a 66-minute seche, a standing wave, that went back and forth for 36 hours.
Fathian said: “It could be a disaster. It could be, because Tracy Arm is a very popular tourist destination.
During the summer season, more than 20 boats sail the Tracy and Endicott rigs each day, including up to six large vessels. If the collapse had happened a few hours later, in the middle of the tourist day, the consequences would have been tragic. But even at 5:26 in the morning, the tsunami was enough to scare the few people who were nearby.
About 55 kilometers from Harbor Island, a group of surfers saw water rushing through their tents 20 minutes after the flood. The storm took away their gear and one of the kayaks. Near No Name Bay, watchers on the motorboat reported 2-2.5-meter waves coming ashore from the Tracy Arm side, followed by a second 1-meter wave.
Farther away, 85 miles from the source, the crew of the small submarine anchored in the Fords Terror saw waves crashing onto a nearby sandbar; Then it lifted their ship physically three meters even though the tide was falling. They said, the wind stopped until 11 o’clock in the morning, but their small ship was only left on dry land a few minutes after the water receded.
At the mouth of the fjord, the National Geographic Venture ship carrying about 150 people got stuck in thick fog. The pilot saw waves, clear water, and lots of ice and debris near the edge of the fjord. Because the sharp and deep sea near the mouth of the river matched the speed that exhausted the power of the waves, the people on board got out without injury. Fathian said: “It was incredibly lucky that no one was hurt.”
