A man has been killed in a massive shark attack in Western Australia Wildlife Stories

A 38-year-old man was bitten at a popular swimming and fishing spot near Perth, police said.

A man has died from his injuries after being attacked by a great white shark in Western Australia, authorities have said.

The attack took place at 10 a.m. Saturday (02:00 GMT) off Rottnest Island, west of Perth, Western Australia police said.

Australia’s ABC News reported that the 38-year-old was taken by boat to Geordie Bay Jetty, where paramedics and police performed CPR. He died at the scene.

Pictures released by the outlet show ambulances and lifeguards gathered at the popular swimming and fishing spot, Horseshoe Reef.

The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development told the AFP news agency that the shark measured four meters (13 feet) and confirmed that it was pure white.

The attack was the first shark attack in Western Australia since last March, when a human was was injured while surfing at Wharton Beach in the remote area.

A several vessels along the east coast of the country earlier this year caused the closure of several beaches in New South Wales.

Last September, a rare attack occurred on a Sydney beach, killing a surfer in his 50s.

Very recent serious injury in Sydney before this was in 2022, when a 35-year-old British consultant became the first person killed in a terrorist attack in the city in almost 60 years.

Most shark attacks occur along Australia’s eastern and southeastern coasts, with about 20 occurring each year, according to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare.
