Smaller penalty for Sun Downs…
The Confederation of African Football’s Disciplinary Committee has handed down strict disciplinary measures against South African clubs Sun Downs and Royal Moroccan Army following incidents and clashes in the first leg of the African Champions League final in Pretoria last Sunday.
Emergency meeting and huge fines
Moroccan website “Championship” reported that the Disciplinary Committee, headed by Senegalese Ousmane Kane, held an extraordinary session on Thursday evening to discuss the reports of referees and match observers.
The committee decided to fine Sun Downs $35,000 for breaching safety standards and tools used by security, in addition to the in-house broadcaster’s use of loudspeakers during games at Loftus Stadium.
$100,000 to the Royal Army for “recurring events”.
On the other hand, the committee imposed a larger fine of $100,000 on the Royals, due to what it described as “repeated crowd incidents” during matches in the same tournament.
Penalties varied based on reports from the spotter and security coordinator and included lighting candles, throwing chairs, and public disorder that disrupted security and the organizing process in the stands.
It is noteworthy that the return match will take place tomorrow in Morocco, noting that Sun Downs won the first match with a clear goal.
