A car shooting incident kills at least two people in Germany Story


Police ‘know nothing about the culprit’ but have arrested the driver and insist there was no further risk.

A car drove into a crowd in the city of Leipzig in Germany, killing at least two people.

Police said the driver was taken into custody and was “no longer considered a threat,” but did not provide further details. Emergency responders reported multiple injuries.

About 20 people are said to be “affected” in eastern Saxony.

The mayor of the city, Burkhard ⁠Jung, told reporters at the scene: “We don’t know why.

Emergency services, including firefighters, ambulances and police, were at the scene on Grimmaische Strasse, a street that leads into the central part of Leipzig.

Radio Leipzig reported that a damaged Volkswagen SUV with a man on top was seen running in a pedestrian zone.

The broadcaster quoted witnesses as saying that there were several bodies covered in paper, as well as the hanged man.

Leipzig is one of the largest cities in eastern Germany with a population of 630,000.

Like other European countries, Germany has had a spate of car bombings and stabbings in recent years, some of which were religious or political, some of which were psychological.

Last year, two people were killed in the western city of Mannheim, when a 40-year-old man drove a car into a crowd of pedestrians. A few weeks earlier, a similar attack on an industrial demonstration in Munich killed two and injured more than 40, including many children.

In December 2024, several people were killed in a car attack on a Christmas market east of Magdeburg. This happened months after a stabbing attack at a festival in the western city of Solingen.
