A Canadian lawmaker counts the LLM’s response to the floor

Anyone who has used the Internet in recent years is probably used to meeting Common features of LLM that lazy users sometimes forget to remove their AI-generated pabulum. But a Canadian barrister took the idea to a new, embarrassing level this week, reading the LLM’s glaring instructions into the notes on the floor.

Bill Oliver, a member of the Progressive Conservative Party in the New Brunswick legislature, was recognized in a speech last month that “One of the dangers associated with creating public advocacy offices is that citizens often have expectations that exceed the powers assigned to these offices.” He then went on to say out loud that “there is a natural, flowing style to the piece that reads like a legal speech rather than a short summary,” a line with all the hallmarks of an LLM that suggests a different style of writing in a quick response.

The odd reading was not noticed at the time, but a video of the words started circulating on social media. like Reddit and Thread earlier this week. In Canada, the snafu is now getting a lot of attention from the likes of Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and The Toronto Starthe latter called it a sign of “a great division in our society: between the elite, who are more than happy to delegate their work to the Borg; and the masses, who see this as inappropriate.”
