Lawyers for those found guilty must file individual pleas for reduced sentences. The de Moraes ruling essentially puts a hold on such requests until the court has had a chance to issue a ruling consistent with the law.

Lawyers for the 71-year-old Bolsonaro filed an appeal with the Supreme Court on Friday, asking it to reverse what they called a “miscarriage of justice”.

Bolsonaro’s conviction and sentence remains a a matter of controversy in Brazil, where his allies accused him of being a political witch.

Critics welcomed it as a proper response, which even former leaders are not exempt from.
