FIFA’s proposal sparks a European revolution

The row between the international federation and the European football associations came to a head after UEFA released a fiery new statement accusing Gianni Infantino of turning the game into a “commodity” by selling its biggest tournaments to private investors under the guise of development.

In its fiercest attack since the crisis broke out, the European Union accused its international partner of using the game as a tool to “enrich himself and his circle of friends” through a controversial plan to set up a commercial company that would hold the rights to major competitions, notably the World Cup, and offer its shares for sale.

Infantino’s plan revolves around luring the 211 national federations, promising them $40 million per federation, and whoever agrees by a September 19 deadline.

Infantino revealed in his letter to the federations that rejecting the offer would mean their profits would drop to $2.7 billion, a cut of up to 75 percent, language that many saw as outright blackmail, and the FA and other major federations expressed strong reservations about it.

UEFA reacted sharply today, Wednesday, with a short but fierce statement. “Today we learned of the deadline that FIFA has set for the federations to support its proposals or they will lose the exclusive payment. This alone reveals everything about this program.”

“Following our consultations with all stakeholders in the game, we confirm that there is widespread and growing opposition to FIFA’s plan … FIFA cannot continue to use our sport to enrich itself and its cronies.”

He continued. “We are in a position to grow the game properly and it is time to put the interests of federations, clubs, leagues, players and fans first.”

UEFA’s 55 member associations are expected to hold a decisive meeting tomorrow, Thursday, to unify their position and collectively respond to Infantino’s plan to privatize the World Cup.
