When you jump among many different programs Google provides-Gmail, Google Maps, Google Calendar, YouTubeand more—maybe you’re not thinking too much about the Google account that supports all of these or the many updates you can find to help you customize your experience across all of these apps.
If you haven’t opened your Google account page on the web or on your phone, there are many ways to browse there. They cover everything from data security and browsing history to the backup emails Google needs in case you get locked out of your account.
Here we’ll take a look at seven of the most common settings: the ones that don’t get the most attention but are an important part of how your Google account and apps work. It’s worth spending a few minutes to review this and make sure it’s set up the way you want it.
Take a moment to think about how much of your content you want to share with Google, or how much content you’re creating to be seen online. Let your comfort level guide your decisions in how you adjust these settings.
The starting point for all these preferences is your Google account page on the Internet.
Google will use information about your location and services to customize your experience. This is very useful for Google Maps, because it means you can get directions to your home or office with just one click instead of typing in the address every time. (You should see Home and Work shortcuts appear when you search for your destination.)
There are advantages to getting weather forecasts and corresponding results as well. Google’s privacy policy applies: No one else can see the address you’ve saved, but you may start seeing more ads for sandwich shops in your area.
To set up these addresses from your Google account page, click Personal information and then maybe Home address or Work address. You can enter the address manually, or select a location on the map.
You might not think of your Google account in the same way as a Facebook or Instagram profile, but Google shares a lot of information about you with other people. When you send someone an email through Gmail, they can click your profile picture and see everything that’s public on your Google account page. Similarly, when you leave a comment on Google Maps, viewers of the comment can click on your name or photo and view public information on your Google account page.
