The FIFA Peace Prize continues to cause controversy. In a letter to FIFA, 50 European representatives called for an investigation into the circumstances surrounding FIFA President Gianni Infantino’s awarding of the FIFA Peace Prize to US President Donald Trump.
In a letter to FIFA’s ethics committee, the representatives, who come from 13 different countries, called on “FIFA’s ethics committee to conduct an investigation with the utmost speed and integrity,” a demand that rights group FairSquare had previously called for since last December, according to the newspaper. “L’Equipe” French.

The representatives, most of whom are social democrats, liberals and greens, see their request as “an opportunity for FIFA to demonstrate its commitment to political neutrality, transparency and accountability”, shedding full light on the circumstances surrounding Gianni Infantino’s awarding of the FIFA Peace Prize to Donald Trump.

“FairSquare” organization welcomed the message of 50 European representatives, considering it “the most visible intervention by European political officials against the mismanagement and violation of rules at the world football summit since the European Parliament called on Infantino’s predecessor, Sepp Blatter, to resign in 2015.”
The British organization, in particular, calls on the ethics committee of FIFA to investigate the circumstances of awarding this award, noting that FIFA has not yet specified its criteria or awarding mechanisms.
FairSquare believes Infantino’s stance threatens “the integrity and reputation of football and FIFA itself.”
The organization also continues to have the support of the Norwegian Football Association, the only one of FIFA’s 211 member associations to join the initiative.
The Norwegian federation also filed a complaint with FIFA’s ethics committee, which has yet to open any investigation, and the International Federation has not responded to these complaints or the controversy surrounding the Peace Prize.
What could this imply?
If found to have breached the duty of impartiality set out in Article 15 of FIFA’s Code of Ethics, those responsible for the incident could face “a fine of not less than 10,000 Swiss francs, in addition to a ban from any football-related activity for a period of not more than two years”.
