5 days before the end of his powers. The Moroccan federation makes a decisive decision on Lakyaa

What happened?

The Royal Moroccan Football Federation has decided to postpone its elective general assembly from next Friday until next September, in a move that automatically extends the tenure of its president, Fouzi Lakka, for several more months, despite the official end of his third presidential term later this week.

Sources close to the Moroccan federation told Foot Mercato that the delay was due to organizational and logistical reasons, meaning that Lekian, who has been president of the federation since 2014, will legally continue in his duties until the new General Assembly is held and the next president is elected.

The most likely candidate

Laquia remains the most likely candidate for re-election to a fourth term at the helm of the Moroccan federation, taking advantage of his growing international standing and exemptions under Moroccan law that allow him to run for another term.

Growing African and international influence

Lakyaa’s position is bolstered by his position as Vice President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and an influential member of the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) Council, giving him increasing influence at the African and global football level and making him a key figure in shaping the future of the game on the African continent.

Successes contribute to survival

Morocco’s recent success also plays a decisive role in increasing Lekyaa’s chances of leading the federation, especially after the historic achievement achieved by the Atlas Lions at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, when they reached the semi-finals for the first time in their history, in addition to the success of the Africa N Cup and Morocco Cup. The 2026 World Cup, hosted by the USA, Canada and Mexico.
