2026 World Cup: Why Erling Haaland is the man no one wants to face as Norway make history.

Long before the start of the game, thousands of Norwegian fans had gathered outside the stadium, many wearing Viking hats, waving red flags and singing famous songs from this World Cup.

There was joy, naturally, but also something else – faith. A quiet belief that this team can compete with anyone.

Over the years, Norway has produced world-class talent, but has watched major tournaments from afar.

This is only their fourth World Cup appearance – the first since 1998. And the last two last 16 appearances before this year were 1938 and 1998, 50 years apart.

Until last Tuesday, they had yet to win a World Cup knockout game. They have now won two in a row – the latter against a five-time winner and the tournament’s most decorated team.

“I told the boys I don’t think it’s 50-50 but if we play at our best and have winners we have a real chance,” Norway boss Solbakken said.

At full time it was Haaland who led the celebration, beating the drums as he and his teammates played the epic Viking Row with their fans.

“It’s a crazy day,” said Holland. “It’s one of the craziest days in Norwegian history.”

Warnock said: “He is very passionate and right. He plays in one of the best teams in world football, in clubs.

“But when you play for Norway, you’re not a big name. Norway is starting to make history for itself and he’s at the forefront.”

“The whole nation is rowing together,” Solbakken said, “and by that I mean we’re having a big party here and in Oslo and all the big and small towns across Norway.”

“The rowing is a symbol of that, and it shows that we’re all in this together. So I think it’s good days, it’s a good summer to be a fan – I think it’s better to be a fan than a coach.”

Rowing dominates the World Cup. And now Rooney will have to row the River Mersey After promising to do so if Norway make the quarter-finals.
