England manager Thomas Tuchel expects Reece James to be available for Saturday’s World Cup quarter-final against Norway (22:00 BST).
Tuchel’s right back problem has worsened over time Jarel Kwansah’s red card in Mexico’s 3-2 win on Sunday This means the Bayern Munich defender is suspended for England’s next play-off game in Miami.
James returned to full training after suffering an injury in the second group game against Ghana and missed the games against Panama, Democratic Congo and Mexico.
But there are hopes the 26-year-old can ease England’s right-back woes by returning to full training this week.
Ezri Konsa, who started all of England’s games at centre-back, finished as a right wing-back after Quassah’s red card in the 54th minute in Mexico City.
Over five matches, James, DJ Spence, Konsa, John Stones, Kwansah and midfielder Dylan Rice have featured as right-backs at various points. Tino Livramento has a calf injury.
Konsa and Spence remain Tuchel’s options but the expected availability of James will come as good news as the Chelsea captain is recognized as England’s premier right-back.
