The Egyptian Football Association has asked FIFA to expel the officials responsible for Argentina’s World Cup last-16 loss.
EFA said it had lodged the complaint with football’s world governing body and wanted an investigation into the “double standards” at the game in Atlanta.
With Egypt leading 1-0 in the second half, the video assistant referee (VAR) awarded Mustafa Zico a goal after Egyptian midfielder Marwan Attiyah was penalized for a leg-kick by Lisandro Martinez early in the period.
Egypt also thought Mohamed Salah was fouled in the penalty area by Argentina, as last year’s champions made it to the final. 3-2 win.
EFA statement: “The President of the Egyptian Football Federation, Hany Abu Rida, has appealed to FIFA to investigate the serious refereeing error committed by the refereeing team against the French referee Francois Letissier, which caused the Egyptian team to lose the match and withdraw from the World Cup.”
The EFA called for an investigation after a team of referees and video technology judges said there were “obvious errors and a failure to review some images”.
“After investigating these mistakes, he asked the referee and the entire team to be excluded from the World Cup,” he said, adding that it was “a discriminatory crime against the Egyptian national team.”
Egypt have never reached the quarter-finals of a World Cup.
Argentina’s captain Lionel Messi, who will play in the last World Cup, scored the first goal in the 79th minute and equalized in the 83rd minute.
After match referee Hossam Hassan said Egypt had been “handled unfairly” and “suffered a lack of justice”.
“Maybe they want to keep the world champion in the race, maybe they want Messi in the race,” he said.
Zico said: “The referee was really unfair. The unfairness was obvious, it was unfair from the start of the game.
“It’s clear that this race is fixed.”
Argentina play Switzerland in Kansas City on Saturday (02:00 BST, Sunday).
