Rooney and his two former France internationals, Gael Clichy and Olivier Giroud, thought Ronaldo would be in a better position to shoot himself on goal than try to set him up for his first chance.
Former France defender Clichy also believes Ronaldo’s superstar status is affecting how some of his teammates play.
“We said at the start of the game that Ronaldo would help young players with his character and experience, but sometimes players like that can take too much of the limelight without realizing it,” he told BBC One.
“In the first opportunity, maybe if it wasn’t Ronaldo, he (Consecuao) would have gone to the goal.
“I’ve been with some players at Arsenal and Manchester City, you feel the player is the most important player, unconsciously he’s taking everything from each player.
“I’m not saying it’s right or wrong, but when you take them out, you can see players taking responsibility.”
Clichy said the situation was not necessarily Ronaldo’s fault and added: “It’s normal and the manager’s choice here is important because in 90 minutes, ‘is he going to take him off because we know he has a goal in him?’ We said.
