Barry’s playing style is not recognized by many in the England squad, with the former midfielder spending most of his time in the lower leagues.
20 years ago he was part of the Accrington Stanley side that won the Conference to return to the Football League for the first time in 44 years.
Speaking to 5 Live Sports, Barry recalled that anniversary.
“I was shocked at the question, ‘Did I win the league 20 years ago for Accrington Stanley?’ he said.
After retiring from playing, Barry’s first coaching job was as assistant manager at Wigan Athletic. But after impressing Frank Lampard on the Uefa Pro License course, he became first team manager at Chelsea in the summer of 2020.
Tuchel replaced Lampard when the former England midfielder was sacked in January 2021, but the German retained Barry. He had Chelsea within months. He won the Champions League.
During that time, Barry spread his wings into international football – working as an assistant coach. Republic of Ireland Before taking on the same role under Roberto Martinez – first from Belgium, Then Portugal.
This has allowed him to coach at the World Cup and European Championships, as well as working with international greats including Cristiano Ronaldo and Kevin De Bruyne.
Known as an innovative and enthusiastic coach, Barry specializes in set-pieces and wrote a dissertation as part of his pro license for which he analyzed 17,000 throws.
Barry met Tuchel when he was in Germany He took him to Bayern Munich in 2023..
“It’s a gift as a young English coach to have a manager like him,” he said.
“He’s absolutely world-class in my opinion, and now he’s at his best, at his best.
“It’s really in the heat of competition that I think he comes into his own, and I think the players will see it and feel it.
“So now the dynamic between me and him is that we spend a lot of time together, we push each other, and we push each other on his back and we push the team.”
Barry is the only England manager in Tuchel’s core support team, although Justin Cochrane is part of the extended coaching staff.
Henrik Hilario, Nico Maier and James Melbourne join Tuchel and Barry. Signing a new contract until 2028.
