2026 World Championship: John Higgins returns to the semi-finals against Shaun Murphy

In the opening session of the World Championship semi-final at Sheffield’s Crucible Theatre, John Higgins produced a fighting display to fight back from 3-1 down to draw 4-4 with Shaun Murphy.

It was a far cry from the four-time world champion, whose top 50 break ranked him eighth in the tournament.

Indeed, for much of Thursday afternoon he still seemed to be reeling from his quarterfinal win over Neil Robertson.

Higgins, who turns 51 in May and is the oldest semi-finalist since Ray Reardon in 1985, was at the Crucible after midnight on Wednesday and was told he could not make easy pots in an error-strewn performance.

However, not for the first time in the competition, he showed all the qualities of determination and granite match, which makes him a dangerous opponent.

Their best-of-33 match resumes on Friday at 10:00 BST, with the remaining last four between China’s Wu Yize and Northern Ireland’s Mark Allen kicking off at 19:00 on Thursday.
