2026 French Open Results: Novak Djokovic beats Joao Fonseca in third-round thriller.

Novak Djokovic’s record 25th Grand Slam singles title is on the line after rising star Joao Fonseca produced a stunning display to win a five-set tie in the third round of the French Open.

The Serbian is the only player left in the draw to win a major title after world number one Janic Siner lost on Thursday.

But after winning the first two sets, Djokovic gradually lost to the 19-year-old Fonseca, and hit to force a decider.

Fonseca came from 3-1 down in front of the players to win the fifth game 4-6 4-6 6-3 7-5 7-5 after a grueling four hours and 53 minutes.

Fonseca is the first teenager to beat the Serb in a major – a testament to his composure against the game’s all-time greats.

It was the third time in 22 matches that Djokovic failed to reach the second week of Roland Garros.

With Sinner sidelined and Carlos Alcaraz skipping the clay courts with an injury, Djokovic is left wondering if his best chance to win that elusive 25th Grand Slam has slipped out of control.

Fonseca, who has won 18 of his 21 clay court matches in 2026, joins two-time finalist Casper Rude or American 24th seed Tommy Paul in the second week with 19-year-old Rafael Jodar.
