Jones is winless in six first-round matches at four Grand Slams – although this was her first main-draw appearance at Roland Garros.
She is unique among English players, having left Bradford and moved to Barcelona at the age of 10, growing up playing on clay.
But her 2026 season was severely disrupted by physical issues. Jones, who was forced to retire from her opening match at the Australian Open in January due to a torn muscle in her hip, faced a gym disaster as she neared her return to full fitness.
Jones told BBC Sport ahead of the race: “I was very lucky to come out of the race the way I did in terms of fitness.
“The hospital said I was lucky to have surgery or a brain bleed as it turned out.”
The 25-year-old was taken to hospital with head injuries and later developed headaches and dizziness – symptoms similar to shock.
But Jones said the emotional damage has just as much impact as the physical damage.
“It was such a stop-start year, two steps forward, two steps back,” she said.
“It’s a big problem for me if my behavior feels counterproductive to someone.”
