Cameron Norrie suffered heartbreak at the French Open when he was forced to retire injured in the first round – the first time he had done so at a Grand Slam.
The British number one suffered a rib injury in the build-up to Roland Garros after “over-preparing”.
Nori took the court in Paris on Tuesday afternoon and met Paraguay’s Adolfo Daniel Vallejo for the first time.
However, the 30-year-old struggled to get going after losing four points in a narrow points gap and a stoppage in his second start.
After Nori loses his serve, he calls out to the doctor and trainer, pointing to his ribs as he sits in the shade.
“Every serve is a struggle” for his team, but he still chose to look to the next game.
But Norrie was unable to get close to the net as he rose to serve and held 7-6 (9-7) 2-0.
Nori He retired in 2014 at the Futures event – a tournament at the lowest level on the men’s tour – but had never previously retired in a Grand Slam or ATP Tour event.
It’s a blow for Nori, having reached the fourth round last year, but he’s the safest bet at Wimbledon over four weeks.
Jacob Fearnley’s retirement leaves him as the only Briton left in men’s singles, with Jack Draper missing out on a clay court Grand Slam through injury.
