Sprinters Thomas Young and Sophie Hahn won gold medals for England on the opening night of athletics at the Commonwealth Games.
Both won their races in the men’s and women’s 100m T38 finals in Glasgow and Young did so to mark her 26th birthday in style.
Young, who missed the 2022 Games due to injury, said “this is probably the best birthday I’ve ever had” after a season-best and Games-record time of 11:11 seconds.
In the women’s final, Hahn beat Team Wales captain and defending champion Olivia Brain to win with a time of 12:79, with England teammate Maddie Down posting a personal best of 12:86 to secure the bronze medal.
British champion Sam Bennett won silver in the men’s 110m hurdles final, beating Jamaica’s Demario Prince in a personal best time of 13:30. Tedde Ozoro of England missed out on a medal in fifth place.
Kimani Jack, 22, won bronze in the men’s high jump final with a jump of 2.20m, with the gold medal going to Romain Beckford of Jamaica who cleared 2.25m.
In one round of the women’s 800m, Olympic silver medalist Georgia Hunter Bell won her heat in two minutes 02.61 seconds, qualifying both Scotland’s Jamie Reiki.
