Neil Gourley is a man on a mission. The Commonwealth Games in Glasgow loom large this summer and the 31-year-old Scot is determined to overcome months of injury frustration with a starring role.
“If I have to crawl across four laps of the track I’ll be there,” he told BBC Scotland.
Gourley, who has world and European indoor 1500m silver medals to her name, has already been selected for the mile event in her home town after “an injury-plagued winter affected by two different injuries”.
“I’m doing a lot better now than I was a few months ago,” Gourley added.
He began the winter on the sidelines, dealing with the patella tendon tear that bothered him last season.
After returning in February, a broken leg the following month sent him to the sidelines for several more weeks.
His bid to become home hero is hardly ideal preparation.
However, he explained: “I’m really starting to see some consistency now and thanks to the cross training I’ve been doing, I don’t seem to be too far off fitness.
“The challenge is to get fit in time for the Commonwealth Games this summer, among other things.
“I want to be at the top of the championship and win a medal in Glasgow, but I will never shy away from the fact that it is going to be incredibly challenging.
“This year I’ve had some bumps and made it harder on myself. But if every day can be planned from now on I think I’ll be really competitive in that final.”
