19 people died in an earthquake in Mindanao

Earthquakes are common in the Philippines, which sits on the geologically unstable “Ring of Fire.” While most of these earthquakes are small and relatively peaceful, some have been fatal: a 6.9-magnitude earthquake hit the Central Visayas region last September, killing more than 70 people.
