More than 12,000 people arrived in England on small boats this year, a 44 per cent drop on the same period last year.
A Home Office spokesman said: “Smuggling gangs are taking a bigger threat than ever, with the number of people being crammed onto boats that don’t reach the sea increasing every year.”
of The previous record for the number of refugees in one ship It was 125.
The Home Office said: “This crossing is a stark reminder that criminal gangs have no regard for the safety of the people they claim to help, and the fact that lives are being lost across the Channel as a result.”
“This is why we have signed a new agreement with France to prevent these dangerous journeys, building on the more than 45,000 tests that have stopped since the election and increasing enforcement measures on the coasts.”
