12 people arrested for threatening Islamic incident in Suffolk

Twelve people have been arrested on suspicion of making right-wing terror threats at an Islamic event in a country estate in Suffolk, police said.

Counter-Terrorism Police (CTP) London said the UK Ijtima event at the Shrubland Hall in Barham had been canceled as a precaution following a possible threat on Sunday morning.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmoud said the police response to the “credible threat” at the festival “undoubtedly saved lives”.

London’s counter-terrorism chief, Commander Helen Flanagan, said the arrests had been carried out in a number of locations around the country.

The CTP confirmed the investigation was “related to right-wing terrorism” and officers were searching various addresses across the country in connection with the arrests.

He said eight people were arrested and detained under Section 41 of the Terrorism Act 2000.

While three other people were arrested on suspicion of murder, a woman was arrested on suspicion of assisting a criminal.

Of these, one person has been released on bail, while the remaining three are in custody.

Police said they do not believe there is any widespread threat to the public in connection with this case.

“I know this is very sad news for British Muslims,” ​​Mahmoud said.

“We must oppose hate and unite around a shared belief in a nation that is open, generous and tolerant to all our communities.”
