A painful blow
Canadian winger Marcelo Flores suffered a serious injury in his right ACL during Tigres Unal’s CONCACAF Champions Cup final against Toluca last Saturday, meaning he will miss the 2026 World Cup in Canada, Mexico and the United States.
Flores confirmed the injury, saying: “I’m sorry I haven’t been able to get in touch with anyone yet. I’ve had a hard time. I’d like to thank everyone for their messages… I’ll be back stronger than ever.”
Flores suffered the injury just 15 minutes after coming on as a second-half substitute when he dribbled in the penalty area before his foot slipped on the turf and he fell to the ground in pain, unable to put his weight on his right leg.
The medical staff of “Tigres” had to immediately remove him from the field.
Canadian coach Jesse Marsh confirmed the medical diagnosis of the injury at a news conference on Sunday, expressing his and the coaching staff’s and players’ deep sorrow for the young star, who he named to the final 26-man roster last Friday along with Alphonso Davis and Steven Eustaquio.
Born in Canada to a Mexican father, Flores is a successful transition story, initially choosing to represent Mexico before deciding to switch his international citizenship once to Canada.
Marsh called him up for the first time last January, but he did not join due to a change in procedure before he made his first official appearance in March against Iceland and Tunisia.
The injury casts a shadow over Canada’s preparations for the World Cup on home soil, as Flores was seen as an important attacking option with speed, skill and the ability to play in multiple positions up front.
